NON-VINTAGE

Non-Vintage (NV) or Multi-Vintage (MV) Champagne – often referred to in Champagne as Brut Sans Année (BSA) – represents the core of most Champagne houses' production. Compared with Vintage Champagne, it offers a number of distinct advantages:

Consistent House Style:

The greatest advantage of a Non-Vintage Champagne is its consistency. By blending wines from different harvest years, the cellar master can maintain the same style, aromatic profile, and quality year after year. Consumers know exactly what to expect.

Complexity Through Blending:

While a Vintage Champagne reflects the character of a single harvest year, a Non-Vintage Champagne combines the qualities of several vintages. The marriage of young base wines and reserve wines can create remarkable aromatic complexity.

Freshness and Accessibility:

NV Champagnes are generally crafted to provide optimal drinking pleasure upon release. They are often fresher, more vibrant, and more immediately approachable than many young Vintage Champagnes.

Greater Consistency Despite Climate Variations:

Less successful or atypical harvests can be balanced through the use of reserve wines. As a result, quality is less dependent on the characteristics of any single year.

Outstanding Versatility:

Non-Vintage Champagnes are often designed as highly versatile wines. They perform equally well as an aperitif and as companions to a wide range of dishes.

Earlier Drinkability:

While many Vintage Champagnes benefit from extended bottle ageing, Non-Vintage Champagnes are usually approachable sooner and can be enjoyed shortly after purchase.

Excellent Value for Money:

Since they do not require the exceptional fruit selection associated with vintage declarations and can be produced in larger quantities, Non-Vintage Champagnes often deliver outstanding quality and enjoyment at a more accessible price point.

A Showcase of the Cellar Master's Skill:

The art of blending is demonstrated nowhere more clearly than in a Non-Vintage Champagne. The ability to create a harmonious and consistent wine from different vintages and vineyard sites is considered one of Champagne's highest winemaking achievements.

In summary, Non-Vintage Champagnes express the signature style of a Champagne house more strongly than the character of a single vintage. They stand out for their consistency, balance, freshness, and versatility, often providing the most authentic representation of a producer's philosophy and craftsmanship. For this reason, many of Champagne's most celebrated cuvées are intentionally produced as Non-Vintage wines and are by no means less sophisticated than Vintage Champagnes.
